Puzzle Number: G4045
Puzzle Description
Seagulls at Staithes is a 636 piece jigsaw puzzle by Roger Neil Turner. Roger again displays his characteristic style with fishing boats at a sea side working village that has both tourists and fishermen as the main sources of income. The puzzle measures 68 x 32 cms when complete and can be made over and over again without any loss of quality due to the high quality recycled puzzle board used in its manufacture.
Staithes was originally a fishing village that has gone through several transitions. Its most famous incarnation being as an artist's colony during the Victorian era and into the early 20th century known as the Staithes Group lived and worked there. The Staithes group or Staithes School was an art colony of 19th-century painters based in the North Yorkshire fishing village of Staithes. Inspired by French Impressionists such as Monet, Cézanne and Renoir, the group of about 25 artists worked together in plein air, in oil or watercolour. The group contained renowned artists such as Laura Knight (who kept a studio in the village with her husband and fellow painter Harold Knight), Frederick W. Jackson, Edward E. Anderson, Joseph R. Bagshawe, Thomas Barrett and James W. Booth.
Gibsons puzzles have employed a motif popular throughout their puzzle range such as that of a long established seaside village being adapted for other purposes usually tourism and or a modern day fishing village.
Staithes, due to its isolation and difficult access down a steep cliffside road, has never had to endure the volume of tourists of other seaside locations many of which are also found in the Gibsons puzzle catalogue. Once upon a time Staithes with the help of a newly built railway line had commercial success when ocean going traffic brought exotic cargo from points east. Nowadays, small fishing boats from Staithes ply the north east waters and eke out a marginal living for their owners and crews.
