This is a 1000 piece jigsaw puzzle by Evgeny (Eugene) Lushpin from Gibsons called After the Rain. Beyond nostalgia, this puzzle by Lushpin, which is one of several of his jigsaw puzzles in the Gibsons puzzle catalogue represents a combination of many times periods and locations across an old Europe.

High, pale violet clouds tinged with peach and white seemingly streak by as the wet weather moves off into the distance. It feels as though a wind has picked up and the tall plane trees so characteristic of France and London have lost some of their leaves which makes us think of the coming autumn season. The sky is actually very bright given how dark the streets look. The cobbles street is so wet it looks quite slippery. The slight chill that Lushpin conveys is offset by the warmth of the lights coming from restaurants and homes up and down the damp street.

The highly atmospheric setting of restaurants and bars on a wet cobble stone street at sunset reminds us of the fabulous work of John O'Brien who passed away several years ago at a very young age and was a master at rendering mysterious street settings without sentimentality but, like Lushpin, conveyed a time not quite our own.

Despite what appears to be a french village setting, Lushpin manages to add a certain flavour that is not altogether French: this location appears to be more Central Europe. Eugene (Evgeni)Lushpin himself was born in Moscow in 1965 which might explain the more central European feel of the location. His colour pallet is very limited and adds to the painting being created at a specific time. It's as if the bright and varied colours of the sunny day are giving way to a more subdued evening where boisterous behaviour gives way to a more relaxed and informal evening setting for friends and lovers to quietly enjoy each others company.

The village houses are made of stone and capped with terra cotta sleeves made into semi circular interlocking tiles. These sleeves have been found in ancient Greek archeological sites from over 2000 years ago. The semi-barrel shape was assumed to be from the baking process where the tiles would encircle the source of heat. Another theory as the the unique shape is that the potters would shape the wet clay over their thighs and thus the semi-circular shape. In the distance there is a large steepled building witha clock tower. Do churches have clock towers? Perhaps it's the local town hall. Again, one cannot be entirely sure what the structure is. Nonetheless, it is very typical of a Gibsons jigsaw puzzle of a street or village scene to include such an imposing structure of authority whether celestial or more temporal.

Gibsons puzzles are made from 100% recycled, high quality paper board and can be made time and time again.
